The Olympics rise on the far side of Puget Sound, on the Olympic Peninsula. On a clear day from Alki or Lincoln Park you can follow their snowy ridgeline for miles. The double peak most people notice first is The Brothers.
The heart of the range is Olympic National Park, a World Heritage site of glaciers, rain forest and wild coast, a ferry ride and a few hours' drive away.
Puget Sound itself is an inland sea of channels, islands and bays, carved by glaciers. Washington State Ferries cross it all day. From West Seattle's Fauntleroy dock they run to Vashon Island and Southworth.
In summer the sun sets behind the Olympics late, around 9 PM at the end of June, and the Alki shore fills up to watch it.
