West Seattle is the hilly peninsula across the bay from downtown. Most people arrive over the West Seattle Bridge, and it still feels like a small town of its own: a main street in the middle, a long beach on the north shore and forest parks along the bluffs.
For a few years it really was its own town. The City of West Seattle incorporated in 1902, and in 1907 it voted to join Seattle. That same year two streetcar lines met at a corner people started calling the Junction.
