The craftsman bungalow

Low roofs, deep porches and tapered columns: the house on your magnet is the kind you pass on block after block in West Seattle.

The Craftsman house: Stay like a local. magnet, carved in birch

The story

Many of West Seattle's craftsman houses went up in the early 1900s, as the streetcars made the peninsula an easy ride from downtown and families came looking for a house with a porch and a yard.

The style grew out of the Arts and Crafts movement, which prized honest materials and good handwork over factory ornament. Builders worked from plan books, and some houses even arrived by rail as kits.

The Junction Retreat is one of them, a renovated craftsman. Our tagline is the line on your magnet: Stay like a local. To us it means the good stuff here is the ordinary stuff, like coffee on the corner, the Sunday market and a walk to the water at sunset.

On your magnet

How to spot one

  1. A low gable roof with wide, overhanging eaves.
  2. Wooden brackets, called knee braces, under the eaves.
  3. A front porch with tapered columns, often on stone or brick piers.
  4. Windows with a few small panes over one big one.
From the hosts

Made in West Seattle by The Junction Retreat.

We designed this magnet and laser-cut it from birch plywood, here in West Seattle. It's part of a small set, a thank-you to the guests who stay with us. If it found its way to your fridge some other way, welcome to West Seattle all the same.

Birch is wood, so keep it dry and wipe it with a dry cloth. Small magnets are dangerous if swallowed, so keep it out of reach of young children.
