The great blue heron

Seattle's official bird: tall, patient and blue-grey, and often standing in the shallows along West Seattle's shore.

The Great blue heron magnet, carved in birch

The story

Seattle made the great blue heron its city bird in 2003, after a year-long public vote run by Seattle Audubon. The heron beat the crow by about two to one.

Herons stand up to about four feet tall, with wings that spread around six feet. They hunt by standing perfectly still in shallow water, then striking fast. In flight they fold their necks into an S and trail their long legs behind, so you can tell one from far off.

They nest together in tall trees, in colonies called heronries, and they stay here all year, rain or shine.

Where to see it

  1. Alki at low tide when herons wade the shallows.
  2. Lincoln Park along the beach below the bluff.
  3. The Duwamish River on the peninsula's east side.
From the hosts

Made in West Seattle by The Junction Retreat.

We designed this magnet and laser-cut it from birch plywood, here in West Seattle. It's part of a small set, a thank-you to the guests who stay with us. If it found its way to your fridge some other way, welcome to West Seattle all the same.

Birch is wood, so keep it dry and wipe it with a dry cloth. Small magnets are dangerous if swallowed, so keep it out of reach of young children.

Eleven magnets, eleven West Seattle stories, plus the craftsman from our first run.
